Although it shares the same name, the all-new Puma 2019 has little in common with its namesake model that Ford sold from 1997 to 2001.
The new Ford Puma is a subcompact crossover SUV, with a choice of hybrid tech and 1.0-litre petrol engines, putting it in the same league as cars such as the Nissan Juke, BMW X1, Audi Q2, Skoda Kamiq, and VW T-Cross.
The Ford Puma is a ‘mild hybrid’ which combines a petrol engine with a small electric motor.
The Ford Puma uses EcoBoost Hybrid technology to improve efficiency via the use of a small electric motor with a 48V battery. The powertrain can’t be driven solely on electricity, so a petrol engine receives additional support from the electric motor whenever it is needed.
The battery is recharged using regenerative braking technology, helping emissions to be reduced and fuel economy to be increased.
The Puma does not need to be plugged in to an external power source as the battery pack recharges as you drive.
The Ford Puma comes in just five varieties at the moment:
Titanium
ST-Line
ST-Line X
ST-Line X Vignale
ST
The Ford Puma is relatively cheap to run. Coming with a 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine (in two different forms), the Puma gives you surprising power when accelerating, whilst only sipping petrol as it runs.
Road tax, fuel costs, and insurance are all reasonable considering the size and power of the Puma, and CO2 emissions are low too.
The Ford Puma 1.0-litre EcoBoost Titanium falls into insurance group 14 in its most basic form but can be classified as group 17 if you upgrade to the 153bhp version.
The more expensive ST-Line X First Edition Plus version, however, falls into group 19, making it slightly more expensive to insure.
For comparison, the SEAT Arona falls into single-digit groups, but costs around the same to insure if higher trims are opted for.
The cost of insuring your Ford Puma can vary significantly depending on factors such as your age, driving history, and location. Below is an example of average insurance quotes for a 30-year-old driver with a clean record, looking to insure a Ford Puma 1.0 EcoBoost 125PS ST-Line 5d Auto in different locations across the UK:
Location | Annual Insurance Cost* |
|---|---|
London (E10) | £926.35 (High) |
Chester (CH1) | £681.20 (Mid-range) |
Newquay (TR8) | £460.96 (Low) |
*The above figures are based on quotes from the Finder UK website, assuming the driver has no existing convictions or health issues. The actual insurance cost may vary based on a number of factors: your age, postcode, driving record, car model, engine size, and the level of coverage you require. Please note these are indicative quotes only and should not be considered as guaranteed premiums. Your actual premium depend on your individual circumstances.
The Ford Puma comes with front, side, and curtain airbags, as well as rear Isofix for two children. There are a variety of safety features that the Puma comes with depending on the specific model. These can include:
Emergency brake assist
Pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection
Ford’s SYNC infotainment system with emergency call function
Tyre-pressure monitoring
Other safety features come as standard on all models, such as cruise control and rear parking sensors.
